Just A Skin Test To Gauge Heart Risk

A skin test to measure cholesterol levels almostinstantly may challenge more complex and costly procedures now used to gauge cardiovascular risk, US physicians have said.

"A simple test that measures the amount of cholesterolin the skin can identify persons who appear to behealthy but actually have early-stage cardiovasculardisease," said James Stein, Associate Professor ofcardiovascular medicine at the University of WisconsinMedical School in Madison.

The study compared cholesterol levels of 80 persons withthe results of tests done with an ultrasound to detectearly signs of blockage in the heart arteries.

The measure of cholesterol in the skin, which can beread in minutes, gives doctors a simple and inexpensivemeans of evaluating cardiovascular problems in otherwisehealthy patients during routine consultations, he said.The test is marketd by McNeil Consumer Healthcare forabout $25 (Rs 1,125).
